ITEM: Gorgeous Sterling Silver Art Deco perfume vinagrette brooch with hand set Marcasite and forget-me-knot flowers. The blue, yellow, and green enamel is in terrific condition for being 100 years old! Now you may be asking yourself, what is a perfume vinagrette? Vinaigrettes, popular from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century, were small containers used for holding various aromatic substances, usually dissolved in vinegar. A tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the liquid, was contained beneath a grill or perforated cover. Make sure to look through all the photos to see the hidden spot on the back of the brooch where you would tuck a piece of fabric drenched in your favorite perfume.
